(updated 11/01/98)
Introduction
------------
This document describes BBEdit, our popular and critically acclaimed text
editor for the Macintosh.

What Is BBEdit?
---- -- ------
BBEdit is a high performance text editor for the Macintosh. The purpose
of a text editor is to prepare text for transport across communications
links (as in an email system), processing by another program (such as a
compiler, HTML renderer, or database system), and to serve for
light-duty text composition tasks. In contrast to a word processor,
whose purpose is to prepare documents for optimal visual presentation,
the focus of a text editor is on the transformation and manipulation of
text as data, rather than on manipulation of visual attributes (such as
style or color).
By design, BBEdit is optimized for the editing, searching,
transformation, and manipulation of text. It provides an array of
general-purpose features which are useful for many tasks, and includes
some features which are specifically tuned to the needs of software
developers and HTML authors.
What Does BBEdit Have To Offer?
---- ---- ------ ---- -- -----
BBEdit features an assortment of capabilities and core features which
make it an excellent general-purpose tool for text processing and light
composition:
* Support for very large files (limited by available memory; 2GB
theoretical max.)
* Multi-file search and replace, with optional "grep" pattern matching
* Optional "soft" text wrapping for easier composition
* Automatic transparent translation of DOS/Windows and Unix text files
* An integrated spelling checker, as well as support for external
spell-checking systems via the Apple Event Word Services Suite
* Optional automatic indentation while typing
* Optional automatic substitution of typographer's quotes while typing
* Optional display of line numbers, tab stops, and invisible characters
* Support for easy insertion of files and directory listings
* Optional automatic backup of files when saving
* Built-in text comparison, for comparing files, folders, and project
documents
BBEdit also takes advantage of current and emerging system software
technologies to provide you with even greater power and flexibility. It
was the first (and remains the only) product in its class to support all
of the following:
* Native PowerPC code, to maximize performance on all Macintosh models
* Macintosh Drag and Drop for text editing and other tasks
* MacOS 8 contextual menus, for quick access to specialized tools
* Powerful on-line help via the Balloon Help and Apple Guide on-line
help systems
* Open Scripting Architecture (OSA) support: operations in BBEdit may be
automated with Frontier, AppleScript, and other OSA-compliant
scripting systems
* Mac OS 8.5 window proxy icons and proportional scrollbars
In addition to its powerful intrinsic features, BBEdit features a set of
integrated HTML markup tools. These tools have made BBEdit the weapon of
choice for HTML authors of all levels and professional webmasters all
over the world. The BBEdit HTML tools include:
* The BBEdit Table Builder, a visual tool for creating and modifying
HTML tables.
* A floating tool palette for "one-click" HTML markup
* Drag-and-drop placement of markup tags, image files, and anchors
* Support for forms, tables, and emerging HTML tag standards
* HTML syntax checking
* An integrated HTML-aware spelling checker
* Easy previewing of HTML documents with any available Web browser
* Integration with Internet tools (Web browsers, FTP clients, news
readers, and other Internet services) via the Internet Config system
* A "PageMill Cleaner" tool, to correct and canonicalize files output
from Adobe PageMill
* A "CyberStudio Cleaner" tool, to correct files output from GoLive
CyberStudio.
* Web site management via the use of searchable File Groups
For those doing software development, BBEdit provides several unique and
powerful features:
* Integrated PopupFuncs(tm) technology, for easy navigation of source
files written in Pascal, C, C++, 68K assembly language, Rez,
Fortran, Tcl, Perl, HTML, ScriptX, JavaScript, Setext, and GuideScript
* Integration with THINK C/Symantec C++ (version 6.0 and later)
* Integration with Metrowerks CodeWarrior (version 1.2 and later)
* Integration with THINK Reference, Toolbox Assistant, ObiWan, and MPW 411
reference systems
* Support for MPW ToolServer
* Reads project documents created by THINK Pascal, THINK C/Symantec C++
and CodeWarrior for browsing and searching
Finally, there are features in BBEdit which don't fit into a particular
classification, but which are there to make BBEdit more useful and
easier to use:
* File system browsers, for surfing through files on any mounted volume
* An "Open Recent" menu, which gives quick access to recently-used files
* An interactive "Quick Search" window, for searching through a document
as you type
* A glossary system, for setting up simple macros that can be inserted at
the touch of a key
* A floating Window List, for managing many open windows at once
* Splittable editing windows
There are more features in BBEdit than we have listed here. We invite you
to download the demo version of BBEdit, and take it for a test drive.
